about

This is a project that I've been thinking about for a while, and I figured that since I've had so much time off because of the lockdown, I should record it. Hence, it's my quarantine album, and "quilt" because it's a lot of sections stitched together.

The bits that sound like songs, the acoustic guitar instrumental at about a minute in, the surf/Shadows electric bit toward the end, and the final section ( They're titled "And Neil Gaiman, Too," "Leather Boots and Bowling Shoes," and "Peter Parker's Blues" if you're interested.) all are several years old and I really wish I remembered how to play them. Yes, the time on Peter Parker's Blues is all over the place, but in my defense, I was playing guitar while trying to hold a kazoo in my mouth. Also, one of the electronic parts was the opening of a previous attempt at this, from early 2020, I think.

Probably the two biggest influences here are Keith Rowe and Wreckless Eric's album Bungalow Hi. It doesn't sound like either, but if I had never heard them, this wouldn't exist. Please don't send them nasty letters after you've heard the album. It's not their fault.

Two lessons I took from listening to Rowe: Don't be afraid of noise and don't be afraid of silence.

Someone listening to this might find a meaning in the fact that two of the folk songs I quote are one about wishing for freedom and an old minstrel song, or that the minstrel song is accompanied by one of the most dissonant part of the album. I'm not saying that was intentional, but I'm also not saying anyone would be wrong for hearing it. The third folk song has no meaning that I can think of., but it came out nice, so I'm including a separate, slightly different mix as the single.

about

Tommy Stevens New York, New York

I guess my life has been pretty uneventful, except for that time I was on a field trip with my high school science class and was bitten by a radioactive spider.

Oh, also, I played at CBGB once. That was pretty cool.
